Note: Tomas Slavicek became impaired due to an accident in training sessions.  He was replaced by the German step dancer Andreas Daniel who joined the North Czech Philharmonic giving an exceptionally inspired performance greeted at the end by a standing ovation from the audience.

Edmonton Review: "I haven’t seen a conductor so young and so full of energy as I saw of Charles Olivieri-Munroe"

The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra did it again!
It was another successful night at theWinspear Centre on Saturday night. Since it was a last-minute decision our seats were a little close to the front…and when I say close, I mean front row. You could practically smell the sweat off the violinists! They weren’t sweating, they were so into the sounds of their music peers that their facial expressions mimicked that of the amazing conductor, Charles Olivieri-Munroe. In my experience, I haven’t seen a conductor so young and so full of energy as I saw of Olivieri-Munroe on Saturday.

I can assure you he has his experience and wowed the audience with his skills, managing such a talented group of musicians in one of the world’s state-of-the-art concert halls. Charles made sure he commended PCL Construction, one of Winspear’s major sponsors, for the exceptional architecture of the Winspear.

Charles Returns to Canada To Conduct Dvorak's "A Hero's Song" with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra

      Saturday, April 14, 2012, 8:00 pm

      Enmax Hall, Winspear Centre

      An Italian Guitar Concerto

      2011-12 Landmark Classic Masters

      • Charles Olivieri-Munroe, conductor
        Robert Belinić, guitar

      About this Concert
Canadian conductor Charles Olivieri-Munroe makes his Masters debut in a dazzling combination of Czech and Latin masterpieces. Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s concerto has become a standard in the canon, while Márquez’ vivacious dance is practically a second Mexican national anthem. Bach’s Chaconne continues to awe audiences, and the rich folk legacy of Bohemia comes to life in a symphonic poem by Dvořák – the last orchestral work written by the Czech master.

Charles Olivieri-Munroe was born on the Island of Malta.

From the age of 2 after the family moved to Canada, Charles was raised in the small town of Unionville, Ontario where he learned how to play the piano. His time was split between sitting on horses - participating competitively in various horse shows - and sitting on the piano bench.

His decision to leave rural Canada to study music seriously led him first to the University of Toronto, and later, to Czechoslovakia. During the 1990's while Eastern Europe was throwing off its Communist past, Charles explored the region's musical heritage and used it as a unique training ground for his career as a conductor.

From his base in Prague Charles Olivieri-Munroe conducts today all over the world.
